Enneagram for Therapists

Using the Enneagram to Help You Grow Your Group or Solo Therapy Practice

The Enneagram is the self-growth system that just keeps giving.  Your Enneagram type shows up in every area of your life from your relationships, to your mental health, to how you run your business.  Knowing your Enneagram type gives you insight and awareness of how you can get in your own way.  It helps you understand what behaviors and beliefs act as barriers to running a business and being an effective leader.  The pitfalls and shadow of your type will show up in how you run your practice.  Understanding your personality patterns can be the difference between creating a thriving practice that utilizes your strengths and creates meaningful impact for yourself and your employees or a practice that creates stress and continues the patterns of your type that keep you stuck.

I interviewed with Andrew Burdette of Practice of the Practice’s podcast Grow A Group Practice.  We chat about the pitfalls and strengths of each Enneagram type as they navigate running group and solo therapy practices.  We focus on what aspects of each type can get in the way of building a successful therapy practice, but our conversation applies to any kind of business.  Listen to the podcast here.

Enneagram Coaching

You set specific goals based on your Enneagram type from the very beginning. We work on breaking through the barriers of your type in a direct, specific way.  While we will talk about feelings, childhood experiences, and current hardships, the focus is on doing the work of your type.  We will incorporate body energetics and somatics into gaining insight into when you are fixated vs. expanded into the more grounded parts of your type. Enneagram Therapy

I use the Enneagram as a tool to help my clients heal trauma and childhood wounds.  I intentionally create space to unpack relationship dynamics and dig deep into the meaning of emotions.  I incorporate other trauma therapy techniques such as EMDR, somatics, and guided meditations.  It’s focused on mental health and wellness. The first step to working together is scheduling a free 20 minute consultation.  We use this time to explore your needs and discuss how we can best work together.  I look forward to hearing from you!

Can I take an Enneagram test to find out my type?

When people first learn about the Enneagram it’s common for them to ask how they can find their type.  They want to know if there is a test they can take.  While there are lots of Enneagram tests available online, it’s common to get inaccurate results.  The Enneagram is just as dynamic and complex as the humans it represents.  Tests do not account for change across your lifetime, subtypes, energetics, or movement to your stress and growth points.  Some types answer test questions similarly even though their core motivation is different.  The point is, don’t let a test tell you who you are.  The best way to type yourself is to read about all 9 Enneagram types and assess which ones resonate with you the most.  Here are some tips on How To Know Your Enneagram Type is Right.

If you would like to test, I recommend being curious and open about your results.  Use the results as a starting place or jumping off point to do more research into the types that resonate with you.  The tests I recommend were developed by Enneagram experts with decades of experience.  The following two tests come from slightly different traditions of the Enneagram.  You may get completely different results from each.

This test developed by the Chestnut Paes Enneagram Academy is a free micro test.  Their teaching places a lot of emphasis on subtypes which is really important.  In my work with clients I also lean heavily on sub-type work.

CP Enneagram Mico Test

This test was developed by Don Riso and Russ Hudson and is available through the Enneagram Institute.
